Creator Permission Checklist Before Reusing Social Media Content

Creator Permission Checklist Before Reusing Social Media Content

Public does not mean copyright-free

A public post is visible to everyone, but the creator normally keeps rights in the photo or video. Downloading a file and publishing it again are separate actions with different consequences.

Get specific permission

Ask where the content may appear, whether it can be edited, how long permission lasts, and whether paid advertising is included. A casual yes to sharing in Stories may not cover a permanent commercial campaign.

Record the agreement

Keep the message, email, contract, date, source URL, and creator identity with the downloaded asset. Teams change, and a clear record prevents confusion later.

Credit is not a substitute

Attribution can be required and is often respectful, but credit alone does not create permission. Follow the terms the creator actually approved and remove the material if the agreement requires it.
