Why one post can have several files

Facebook prepares multiple encodes so a video can start quickly on slow mobile data and still look sharp on larger screens. The labels HD and SD describe those prepared versions, not a new enhancement created during download.

Choose quality for the intended use

HD is normally the better archive copy because it preserves more detail. SD is useful when storage is limited, a message attachment has a size cap, or the video will only be viewed on a small screen. A larger file is not automatically better if the original upload was already low resolution.

Frame rate, audio and aspect ratio
