Aspect ratio describes shape

A 9:16 video is tall, a 1:1 video is square, and a 16:9 video is wide. Resolution describes pixel dimensions. Two files can share an aspect ratio while having very different detail.

Preserve the source frame

Stretching a vertical Reel into a landscape canvas distorts people and objects. Cropping can remove captions or faces. For archiving, keep the original frame and let the player add empty space when necessary.

Plan before republishing

If you own the content and need another format, return to the editing project when possible. Reframing from the original footage produces better results than repeatedly downloading and encoding a published copy.

Check orientation metadata

Some phones store rotation as metadata. Use a modern player before assuming a file was downloaded sideways, and avoid conversion unless the orientation actually fails across devices.
